From Olivia Rodrigo to Liam Payne to Harry Styles

In this series, Kay (@vinyls.kay) takes on our March 15–17 prompts, moving from a debut single that soundtracked her first heartbreak to a song that keeps the memory of a beloved artist alive to an evolution she’s loved watching unfold.

Which debut single still hits for you?

driver’s license
Olivia Rodrigo

Every time I listen to this song, it never fails to take me back to the first time I heard it and how it made me feel. At the time, I was the same age as Olivia - going through my first heartbreak. Listening to this song felt like a warm hug. Once I heard her voice, the beat, and the lyrics, I was truly amazed. I couldn’t stop replaying it for a good week. It’s so beautiful how a song can make you remember a certain time in your life and allow you to reminisce about it whenever you want!

Which song still resonates from an artist who’s no longer here?

Remember
Liam Payne

One of the lyrics is, “How can I forget someone who gave me so much to remember?” It still hasn’t hit me that he passed away. He was a huge part of my childhood and made a lasting impact on so many fans and their childhoods, including mine. Even though the song is about lingering on a past relationship, I listen to it from the perspective of remembering the memories Liam gave us during his time on Earth.

Which artist’s evolution have you loved watching?

Harry Styles

I’ve been a fan of Harry Styles since he was in the band One Direction. Seeing him be a part of a band and then go solo was very hard for me to process. But with Harry’s first single, Sign of the Times, it completely blew me away!

Harry’s albums are all different, but in the best way possible. This month he came out with his fourth album, “Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally.” This album makes you want to get up, dance, and be free. You can definitely tell he went out of his way to explore new sounds for this album — and it was an amazing decision.

I’m so grateful that I get to be here while he is shining so bright. It was emotional seeing him win his first Grammy Award. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.
